EU explores investment opportunities in Mekong Delta

VOV.VN - The European Union delegation to Vietnam arrived in Can Tho City to explore the potential and investment cooperation opportunities in the fields of climate change, agricultural production, and circular economy in Can Tho and other Mekong Delta localities.

At a meeting with the Can Tho leadership, a representative of the EU delegation said most EU member states have strengths in developing high-tech agriculture, renewable energy, a green and circular economic model, as well as climate change adaptation.

The EU representative expressed the bloc’s desire to cooperate with Can Tho and other Mekong Delta localities in agricultural and fishery production by applying high technology or deep processing technology. In particular, he said EU countries are keen to implement climate change response and renewable energy development projects in these localities.

Tran Viet Truong, head of the Can Tho municipal administration, briefed EU officials on cooperation between Can Tho and the bloc, noting that local exports to the EU last year fetched US$126 million. Major export items were rice, seafood, agricultural products, garments, pharmaceuticals, veterinary drugs, and handicrafts.

He suggested that the EU support Can Tho in promoting its investment opportunities to its European businesses, and providing information about commodity standards, tariff preferences, market demand, customs and practices, business culture, as well as trade fairs and exhibitions of the member states.

He also suggested that the EU help strengthen cooperation in European technology transfer, especially in Can Tho’s priority areas such as information technology development, electronic industry, hi-tech agriculture, infrastructure development, including the smart city development model, environmental technology, and climate change adaption.
