Durian exports bring in more than US$2 billion to Vietnam
VOV.VN - Vietnam earned nearly US$2.1 billion from durian exports between January and October 2023, a record high figure, thanks to China’s rising purchasing power, according to the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetables Association (Vinafruit).
Durian was the fruit that recorded the highest export turnover this year, accounting for 51% of total fruit and vegetable export revenue, reported Vinafruit.
Some 94% of the exported products were fresh durians purchased by eight countries around the world, while the remaining 6% were frozen and dried products.
China was the largest consumer of Vietnamese durian during the reviewed period, spending nearly U$1.9 billion on imports.
Along with the Chinese market, the Czech market also increased the purchase of Vietnamese durian, spending nearly US$10 million on imports, representing a 28-fold rise compared to the same period last year.
Dang Phuc Nguyen, Vinafruit general secretary, said that with the skyrocketing growth, Vietnam has surpassed Malaysia and the Philippines in shipping durian to China.
In the final months of the year, the Vietnamese fruit continues to enjoy advantages over the Thai fruit which is severely impacted by the adverse weather conditions.
According to local firms, Vietnam is expected to bag between US$200 - 400 million from durian exports ahead in the remaining months of the year, thereby bringing the total export turnover of this product to US$2.5 billion this year.
