Doosan Enerbility eyes energy cooperation with Vietnam
VOV.VN - Doosan Enerbility of the Republic of Korea is seeking deeper cooperation with Vietnam in the energy sector, particularly in nuclear power and gas-fired electricity, as the Southeast Asian country moves to expand its power supply to support long-term economic growth.
Yun Yo-han, executive vice president of Doosan Enerbility, expressed the group’s strong interest in Vietnam’s nuclear power development orientation, roadmap and policy framework, during his meeting with Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Hoang Long of Vietnam in Hanoi on February 2.
Yun said that Doosan Enerbility is paying close attention to Vietnam’s orientation toward nuclear power development, and it wishes to gain a clearer understanding of the country’s perspectives, roadmap, and policy framework in this sector in order to determine an appropriate level of participation.
He told his host that Doosan has extensive experience in delivering large-scale energy projects worldwide and highlighted the group’s ability to complete projects “on time and on budget” as a major advantage, noting that cost overruns and delays remain common challenges for nuclear and power projects in many countries.
Congratulating Vietnam on the success of the recent 14th National Party Congress, Yun held that Vietnam has set ambitious targets, including GDP growth of around 10% and per capita income of about US$8,500 by 2030. Meeting these goals would require a sharp increase in electricity supply, he stressed, adding that the group is ready to participate in Vietnam’s energy infrastructure development.
Responding to the proposals, Deputy Minister Nguyen Hoang Long emphasised nuclear power is a special and sensitive field, and any decision must be carefully studied and implemented in accordance with legal procedures and national regulations.
Beyond nuclear energy, the Vietnamese side also addressed Doosan’s concerns regarding gas-fired power projects, particularly the Minimum Contract Quantity (QC) mechanism for independent power producer (IPP) projects.
The Ministry of Industry and Trade has reported to and submitted proposals to the National Assembly and the Government to adjust QC standards and is currently amending the relevant Decree to remove long-standing obstacles facing gas power projects. These amendments are expected to establish a clearer legal framework, facilitating smoother implementation for eligible projects.
He stressed that Vietnam welcomes investors with strong commitment and a readiness to carry projects through, while projects that lack clear progress or implementation plans will be reconsidered to avoid wasting resources and development opportunities.
Doosan Enerbility, formerly Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction, is a leading multinational group from the Republic of Korea specialising in energy and infrastructure, including nuclear power plants, thermal power plants, turbines, and sustainable energy solutions.
