Digital economy opens new avenues for Vietnam–Malaysia cooperation

VOV.VN - Vietnam and Malaysia have complementary strengths that offer significant potential for expanding digital economy cooperation, contributing to the development of an integrated and sustainable ASEAN digital ecosystem.

The view was shared at the Vietnam–Malaysia Policy Dialogue on Promoting the Digital Economy, held in Hanoi on November 5 by the Malaysian Embassy in Vietnam to exchange experience, strengthen connections and explore cooperation opportunities.

Addressing the dialogue, Malaysian Ambassador to Vietnam Jamal Sharifuddin Johan emphasised that both Vietnam and Malaysia regard digital transformation, technology and innovation as key priorities in their national development strategies.

Malaysia has accumulated considerable experience in developing digital economy policies and regulatory frameworks, expanding digital infrastructure, establishing data centres and supporting technology businesses. In particular, the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) plays an important role in advancing digital transformation and attracting investment.

According to the Ambassador, Malaysia’s experience could provide a foundation for deeper bilateral cooperation, particularly in developing digital infrastructure and sustainable data centres.

For its part, Vietnam has identified the digital economy as a key driver of economic growth. Dao Ngoc Dat, deputy director of the Authority of Digital Economy and Digital Society under the Ministry of Science and Technology, said Vietnam aims to increase the digital economy's contribution to at least 30% of GDP by 2030 and 50% by 2045.

To achieve these targets, Vietnam is continuing to refine its policies and legal framework governing digital technologies, creating a more enabling environment for businesses to innovate and develop emerging technology sectors.

Against this backdrop, participants focused their discussions on sharing experience and exploring cooperation opportunities in policymaking, digital infrastructure development, support for business digital transformation and innovation.

These efforts are expected to help deepen the Vietnam–Malaysia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership while contributing to the broader development of ASEAN's digital economy.
