Denmark supports sustainable aquaculture

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and the Embassy of Denmark held a conference in Hanoi on Dec. 21 to review the second phase of a programme supporting Vietnam’s aquaculture development.

Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Vu Van Tam said from 2006 to 2012, the programme, the Fisheries Sector Programme Support, Phase II (FSPS II), has introduced many practical models to help poor people involving in fisheries activities have stable incomes.

The Vietnamese government will maintain and build on the results of the programme as well as pour more investment in aquaculture with a view to turning it into a key economic sector, he stressed.

Danish Ambassador John Nielsen said the combined effects of increasing poor household incomes and quality product export increases are good indicators of FSPS II success.

The FSPS II, with a budget of DKK245 million (US$45 million), has helped more than 43,000 people escape from poverty.
