Da Nang airport begins US$58 million expansion of T2 international terminal
VOV.VN - Construction began on May 19 on an expansion project for the T2 international passenger terminal at Da Nang International Airport, with total investment of nearly VND1.5 trillion (US$58 million).
The project aims to improve operational capacity and passenger experience through a modern terminal model that blends resort-inspired spaces, local cultural features and nature-oriented architecture.
According to Da Nang International Terminal Investment and Operation JSC (AHT), the expansion project is intended not only to ease congestion but also to support the development of an international-standard aviation services ecosystem while maintaining the terminal’s five-star Skytrax brand.
The groundbreaking ceremony also marked a step forward in a plan to develop two international airports in central Viet Nam -Da Nang and Chu Lai through 2030, with a vision to 2050. Under the plan, the two airports will have a combined design capacity of around 25 million passengers annually.
In architectural terms, the expansion continues the existing terminal’s “seagull wings” concept. The roof of the expanded section is designed in harmony with the current structure, creating the image of a flock of seagulls in flight.
Inside the terminal, biophilic design principles will be incorporated through green areas, natural lighting and ventilation systems aimed at creating a more relaxing environment and reducing stress for passengers.
The project covers around 3,600 square meters, raising the terminal’s total floor area to more than 21,000 square meters.
Following the expansion, the number of check-in counters will increase from 54 to 85, while the number of boarding gates equipped with passenger boarding bridges will rise from four to seven, helping reduce bus transfers to aircraft.
At the groundbreaking ceremony, Le Quang Nam, Vice Chairman of the Da Nang People’s Committee, described the project as particularly important for the central city and a symbol of Da Nang’s renewal and rise, especially in tourism.
The terminal forms part of Da Nang’s image as a dynamic and welcoming city for visitors from within and outside the country, Nam said, adding that the expansion will contribute to the city’s growth and help improve regional aviation capacity.
