CPI rises 0.54% in September

The consumer price index (CPI) rose 0.54% in September compared to August, raising the index for the first nine months of this year by 2.07% on an annual basic, the General Statistics Office (GSO) announced on September 24.

Core inflation increased by 0.07% over the last month. The hike is lower than the previous month's figure, at 0.09%.

According to GSO, among the eleven groups of goods and services, posts and telecommunications saw a decrease of 0.07% compared to August.

The highest increase was in the education group, with of 7.19%, of which educational services experienced a sharp increase of 8.36% compared to August due to the start of the new school year.

Other increases were seen in the transportation group (by 0.55%) due to two fuel price hikes; cultural, recreational and tourism services (0.18%); apparel, headwear and footwear (0.14%); household appliances (0.11%); food and food services (0.09%); housing and construction materials (0.09%); and beverages and tobacco (0.04%).

After a sharp increase of 6.18% in the previous month, medicines and health services grew by only 0.02% in September.

Not included in the CPI basket, the gold price index in September fell by 0.36%, while the dollar index rose by 0.07% compared to August.
