Coffee exports fall sharply in volume, hit record high in value

VOV.VN - Vietnam exported 140,000 tonnes of coffee worth US$763 million in January, representing a sharp decrease of 41.1% in volume but an increase of 5% in value, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD).

The high value was driven by a sharp rise in the average export price at US$5,450 per tonne, up 78.5% year on year, said the MARD in its latest report.

With the US$763 million export earnings, coffee became the second largest agricultural export in January 2025, only behind wood and wood products that raked in US$1.4 billion.

Last year Vietnam shipped 1.11 million tonnes of Robusta coffee abroad, worth approximately US$4.19 billion. Robusta remained the dominant variety, accounting for 74.47% of total export value, despite a 21.7% decline in volume but a 30.6% increase in value.

Vietnam also exported 65,300 tonnes of Arabica coffee, worth roughly US$240 million, up 63.4% in volume and 53.5% in value compared to 2023.

Meanwhile, the country’s processed coffee exports increased by 35.1% year on year to reach US$1.18 billion, accounting for 21.07% of the total coffee export value.

According to industry insiders, Vietnamese coffee exports are forecast to rise from 1.8 million bags to 24.4 million bags this year thanks to improved supply sources.

Furthermore, both global and domestic coffee markets are anticipated to experience vibrant fluctuations in the year ahead.

Nguyen Thanh Thuy, general director of Golden Beans Coffee Joint Stock Company (SHIN Coffee), pointed out that climate change continues to emerge as a hot issue globally, particularly in relation to vulnerable crops such as coffee.

Most notably, many growing areas in the world’s two largest coffee producers like Brazil and Vietnam have been significantly affected, thereby causing difficulties in coffee cultivation and supply sources moving forward.

Due to these factors, businesses are expected to encounter hurdles when it comes to controlling the quality of input coffee materials in the coming time.

However, coffee consumption in major markets around the world continue to grow, opening up a wealth of opportunities for coffee exports in the time ahead.
