China officially imports Vietnamese frozen durian and fresh coconut

VOV.VN - The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development of Vietnam (MARD) and the General Administration of Customs of China (GACC) on August 19 signed three protocols allowing Vietnamese frozen durian, fresh coconut and crocodile to officially enter the Chinese market.

The signing of the protocols took place in Beijing on August 19 during Vietnamese Party General Secretary and President To Lam’s ongoing state visit to China at the invitation of his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping. It was witnessed by the two Party leaders.

Businesses will be able to export goods if they complete procedures and meet quarantine requirements from the importing country.

MARD Minister Le Minh Hoan said that the signing of these three protocols is the result of negotiations between the MARD and the GACC, opening up opportunities for Vietnamese durian and fresh coconut to access a market of approximately 1.4 billion consumers.

Vietnam mainly exports frozen durian to Thailand, the United States and Europe, with its export earnings reaching hundreds of millions of US dollars. With China opening its doors for Vietnamese frozen durian, the export value of the fruit is expected to leapfrog in the coming time.

China is the largest consumer of Vietnamese fresh durian in the world. Last year saw it import US$2.3 billion worth of fresh durian from Vietnam, accounting for 90% of the exporter’s value.

Vietnam is one of the major producers and exporters of fresh coconut, with 175,000 hectares of land under coconut cultivation, mainly in the Mekong Delta. It expects to earn an additional US$200-300 million from exports when China accepts the Vietnamese fruit.
