China increases purchases of Vietnamese crab
VOV.VN - Vietnam’s crab exports to China in January reached US$18.5 million, representing an 18 fold-rise higher than the same period from last year. according to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP).
Industry insiders attributed this impressive growth to China’s high consumer demand during the Lunar New Year.
Furthermore, Vietnamese crab, especially crab from the southern province of Ca Mau, enjoys strong competitiveness due to its quality, reasonable prices, and delicious flavour which is suitable to the culinary tastes of Chinese consumers.
Meanwhile, crabs from Australia, the United States, and Canada are often large in size, between two and three kilos, and are sold at high prices.
Most notably, the price of Ca Mau crab jumped to VND1.1 million per kilo thanks to China’s rising consumer demand.
With more than 250,000 hectares of crab farming, Ca Mau has developed into a key production area for crab, mainly focusing on the districts of Nam Can, Ngoc Hien, Cai Nuoc, and Dam Doi with output reaching more than VND10 trillion annually.
Currently, 80% of Ca Mau crab output is exported to China, making the northern neighbour a major market which has impacted the prices of Vietnamese crab.
