Car imports from Indonesia, Thailand dominate Vietnamese market in February
VOV.VN - Vietnam spent approximately US$378 million on importing 17,671 completely built-up (CBU) cars in February, up 44.5% in volume and 31.4% in value compared to January, with automobiles from Indonesia and Thailand dominating the local market.
Vietnam Customs reported that Indonesia made up the largest exporter of cars to the Vietnamese market, delivering 6,888 vehicles worth US$97.5 million, double compared to the previous month.
This was followed by Thailand with 6,722 vehicles valued at US$125 million, while China contributed 2,919 cars costing US$101 million.
These figures show that the import of Chinese cars seems to have slowed down due to lower consumption than expected. Meanwhile, the number of imported cars from Indonesia and Thailand increased as they enjoy zero import tax and have competitive prices in the Vietnamese market.
In addition, car models from these two countries are popular among Vietnamese consumers, resulting in a general increase of shopping demand following the lunar New Year holiday.
Over the past two months, Vietnam has imported a total of 24,832 CBU cars with a value of US$538 million.
Indonesia dominated the import market with 9,509 vehicles worth US$135 million, followed by Thailand and China with 8,353 and 5,449 vehicles valued at US$157.4 million and US$171.1 million, respectively.
