Can Tho and Fukuoka ink MoU on drainage cooperation, economic exchange
VOV.VN - A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on cooperation in urban drainage and economic exchange was signed on July 28 between the People’s Committee of Can Tho city and the administration of Fukuoka city, Japan.

Speaking at the signing ceremony held in Can Tho, Tran Van Lau, Chairman of the municipal People’s Committee, described the MoU as an important milestone, paving the way for a stronger and more meaningful partnership between the two cities. He expressed his belief that with mutual goodwill and determination, the cooperation would continue to expand, bringing tangible benefits to both sides’ citizens and businesses.
He also reaffirmed Can Tho’s commitment to effectively implementing the MoU, in line with the broader Comprehensive Strategic Partnership for Peace and Prosperity in Asia and the World between Vietnam and Japan.
According to Can Tho authorities, Fukuoka is regarded as a leading model in Japan for sustainable urban development, smart governance, and environmental protection, particularly in water resource management and climate resilience.
The two cities are currently finalising preparations for a technical cooperation project on urban drainage, which aims to improve Can Tho’s ability to cope with climate change. The project will be funded by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) through its Development Partnership Programme, with an estimated budget of JPY55.1 million (approximately VND9 billion), disbursed directly through Fukuoka.
For his part, Fukuoka Mayor Soichiro Takashima recalled the two cities’ earlier engagements during the 2022 Asia-Pacific Cities Summit, noting that since then, the two sides have exchanged ideas on sustainable urban development and ways of addressing urban challenges.
He welcomed the MoU as a new step forward in bilateral ties and a catalyst for deeper exchanges, particularly in urban innovation, economic cooperation, and people-to-people connectivity.
In recent years, Vietnamese businesses have expanded into Fukuoka, while the Japanese city has supported local companies in exploring opportunities in Vietnam. Since 2023, Fukuoka has actively participated in the Vietwater international exhibition, a platform focused on water and environmental technologies, aimed at fostering connections between Vietnamese and Japanese enterprises.
