Ca Mau seeks to prevent disruption in shrimp production amid new US tariffs

VOV.VN - Following the US’ announcement of a 46% tariff on several Vietnamese products, including shrimp, the Ca Mau provincial People’s Committee has urged seafood processors and shrimp farmers to remain calm and avoid panic.

A number of shrimp exporters in Ca Mau reported that US buyers have requested a temporary halt in imports, raising concerns over a potential drop in raw shrimp prices. The provincial administration promptly issued a notice to inform local businesses and residents about the impact of the new tariffs and called on processors to continue purchasing raw shrimp to maintain production stability.

Authorities urged farmers to stay calm, warning that panic harvesting could disrupt Ca Mau’s shrimp industry.

Enterprises are also encouraged to proactively deal with challenges, report any issues for timely government support, and join hands with local authorities to weather current difficulties.

Previously, the province held a couple of meetings with businesses to gather opinions and develop response strategies. Ca Mau currently has five seafood exporters shipping to the US, with an export value of US$12.86 million.

Following the US announcement, many Vietnamese exporters have stopped quoting prices, signing new contracts, or shipping existing orders to US buyers. A large volume of goods already produced or contracted but not yet manufactured remains in limbo. If the announced tariff rate is not revised, exports to the US could be severely disrupted, leading to a sharp drop in Ca Mau’s overall export revenue.

Meanwhile, raw shrimp prices have plummeted. In just two days, the price of intensively farmed whiteleg shrimp fell by VND 4,000 to 15,000 per kilogram.

Reports from some enterprises and relevant agenciess attribute this to panic among farmers who, fearing further price drops, decided to harvest early, pushing up supply and depressing prices.
