Bangladesh passes proposal on rice imports from Vietnam

VOV.VN - The Government of Bangladesh has approved three separate proposals aimed at procuring 350,000 tonnes of rice in line with the direct procurement method (DPM) from Vietnam, India, and Thailand.

The Bangladeshi Minister of Finance AHM Mustafa Kamal stated that the approval was granted during a meeting which he virtually chaired on March 10 of the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs.

During the course of the meeting approval was granted to a proposal in principle to import 50,000 tonnes of white rice from the Southern Food Corporation (VINAFOOD) in Vietnam.

Furthermore, approval was also given to procure 150,000 tonnes each of non-basmati boiled rice from the Punjab State in India in order to meet emergency purposes, along with from the Sakonnakhon National Farmers Council in Thailand.

When speaking with reporters following the meeting, Minister Kamal said the Bangladeshi Government is attempting to procure rice from different sources in order to ensure that no problems arise in the future.

The Minister also added that Bangladesh Ambassadors in Vietnam, India, and Thailand would negotiate with related companies and organisations in an effort to fix the price of rice which will be imported.
