Automobile imports down over 24% in three months
VOV.VN - Vietnam imported 31,452 completely-built automobiles (CBUs) worth US$632 million in the first quarter of the year, down 24.1% in quantity and 31.7% in value compared to the same period last year, reported the General Statistics Office of Vietnam (GSO).
March alone saw the country spend US$287 million importing 15,000 CBUs, showing sharp increases of 55.5% in number and 41.1% in value month on month, and down 1.7% in volume and 18.8% in value year on year.
The figures show automobile importers prioritised bringing low-cost automobile models into the country.
In March, the Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (VAMA)’s sales stood at 39,500 units, rising by 53.4% against February but decreasing by 15.3% from a year earlier.
Of the figure, the number of domestically assembled automobiles stood at 24,500, up 52.1% against February but down 14.3% compared March last year.
During the January - March period, the number of domestically assembled automobiles was estimated at 62,200, recording an annual drop of 11.3%.
