Aquatic exports to Australia show signs of recovery
VOV.VN - Vietnamese seafood exports to Australia reached US$29.24 million in August, up 13.4% from the previous month and up 3.04% compared to August last year, showing signs of rebound from previous months, according to statistics from the General Department of Vietnam Customs.
Businesses exported 23,500 tonnes of aquatic products worth US$169.4 million to the Australian market during the opening seven months of the year, marking declines of 16.7% in volume and 23.1% in value from a year earlier.
Key Vietnamese seafood export items to this market in the reviewed period saw a downward trajectory, including frozen shrimp, frozen pangasius, frozen seabass, and frozen squid.
Meanwhile, strong export growth was recorded in frozen fish, frozen tuna, frozen octopus, frozen pangasius, frozen crab, dried shrimp, frozen parrotfish, frozen seabass, and fish paste.
Despite its long coastline, Australia remains the major importer of low-value seafood products such as canned fish and frozen fillets, while Australia’s seafood exports are mainly high-value products such as scalloped spiny lobster, premium tuna species and abalone.
At present, Asia, New Zealand, and Norway make up the main providers of seafood products for Australia.
Experts say Vietnamese seafood exports to this market are expected to recover due to the high demand during the year-end period.
They suggest that Vietnamese businesses take the full advantage of agreements signed between the two sides in order to further increase exports to this market moving forward.
