UNICEF commits to child care in Vietnam
(VOV) - The Vietnamese central city of Danang will be selected to host a global conference on children with disabilities, UNICEF Executive Director Anthony Lake has announced.
Lake made the announcement at a May 29 reception hosted by Vice Chairwoman of the Vietnam National Assembly Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan.
He told Ngan that Vietnam is one of the leading countries that have gathered statistical data on children with disabilities.
Lake confirmed that UNICEF cares and provides humanitarian and development aid across the globe, mostly targeting children.
Vietnam has proved itself as a leader in achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) and this is good news for Vietnamese children, he said
At the meeting, Ngan appreciated UNICEF’s role in caring about and protecting children by providing development aid, promoting gender equality and education for all.
She thanked UNICEF for providing assistance to Vietnam in nearly 40 years, especially its effective support projects for the Vietnam National Assembly.
She proposed the UN body help Vietnam finalise its legal system on child care and protection, increase the capacity of its legislators, and improve the legislature’s operational efficiency in overseeing implementation of children-related laws.
Ngan also asked UNICEF to support Vietnam in formulating a legal system in line with the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.
