President praises farmers’ national development contributions

(VOV) - President Truong Tan Sang has hailed Vietnamese farmers’ enormous contributions to national construction and development, their innovations in labour and production, and their role in building new rural areas.

President Sang was speaking at an October 15 ceremony in Hanoi that presented the 2013 “Outstanding Vietnamese Farmer” Awards to 62 preeminent farmers. The ceremony also marked the 83rd founding anniversary of the Vietnam Farmers’ Association (VFA).

Farmers, who now make up 70 percent of Vietnam’s total population and more than 50 percent of its labour force, have been an essential part of national prosperity throughout history. Their loyalty and strength during the renovation process is exemplary, he said.

The President told awardees he hopes farmers across the country will be inspired to make further contributions to agricultural and rural area development

VFA Chairman Nguyen Quoc Cuong said the 62 honoured farmers were recognised for demonstrating creativity and dynamism—particularly via advanced production technology applications improving yield efficiency and produce quality.
