President inspects sea level rise prevention in Ben Tre
(VOV) - State President Truong Tan Sang paid a working visit to the southern province of Ben Tre on March 30 to inspect its efforts to cope with the rising sea level.
He visited the Ba Tri sea dyke and Ba Lai dam and sewage system, which are being built to prevent salt intrusion in the Mekong Delta province of Ben Tre.
At a working session with local authorities, the President stressed the need to complete this system and close the Ba Lai estuary to turn it into a reservoir that will supply water for five districts in the northern part of Ben Tre.
He urged the province to focus on coping with climate change and increasing the efficiency of investment sources. The President also said it is imperative to improve the existing sea dykes and irrigation systems to boost agricultural development.
He urged the province to take better care of social beneficiaries, and continue reducing poverty and restructuring the local economy.
During his visit, President Sang visited victims of landslides and presented gifts to five disadvantaged households. He also called in at the former headquarters of the Sai Gon- Gia Dinh Regional Committee in Mo Cay district.
