President attends 40th anniversary of Saigon-Gia Dinh

VOV.VN - On July 2, President Tran Dai Quang attended a meeting in Ho Chi Minh City celebrating the city's 40th anniversary of changing its name from Saigon to Ho Chi Minh (1976-2016). 

In his address, President Tran Dai Quang praised the city’s robust development over the past four decades,
HCM City is a special urban, an economic, political, cultural, and social center and a key region in the south and asked the National Assembly, the government, sectors, and localities to facilitate the city’s development.

He stressed the importance of upholding the heroic tradition and promoting dynamism and creativity to create more breakthroughs.

“HCM City needs to take the lead in implementing guidelines in socio-economic development, focus on Party building, and promote cultural development. The Party and people closely follow the city’s developments, appreciate its achievements, and ready to share difficulties with the city," he said.

Per capita income reached US$5,538 per year by the end of 2015, up 73 % compared to the level recorded in 2010. The gap in the standard of living among population groups has been narrowed to 6.6 times in 2014 from 10 times in 1992.

In his speech, the Secretary of HCM City’s Party Committee  Dinh La Thang highlighted the city’s achievements over the past 40 years, adding that the city aims to become a major economic, financial, trade, scientific, and technological center in Southeast Asia.
