Party Chief calls for combined efforts to combat corruption

(VOV) -Combating corruption requires high determination and all-out efforts of all sectors and the whole political system.

Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong issued the statement at the third meeting of the Central Steering Committee for Anti-Corruption in Hanoi on July 17.

He asked all relevant agencies to pay greater attention to institutional building work and intensify their supervision of key areas and fields prone to corruption.

Party leader praised the committee’s efforts in the detection and punishment of corrupt acts as well as contributions made by the National Assembly (NA), the Vietnam Fatherland Front (VFF) and the whole political system as well as the press to the fight.

However, he revealed shortcomings and weaknesses in preventing and combating corruption such as inconclusive attitudes of several branches and agencies, unfinished legal system and slow settlement of major cases.

He urged the committee to pay heed to the dissemination of information and prevention measures in the second half of this year, adding that it should focus on handling a number of corruption cases of public concerns.

The meeting worked out eight key tasks for the remaining months such as popularizing the revised law on anti-corruption and teaching of anti-corruption contents in schools.

Seven working groups headed by the committee’s members will be established to inspect anti-corruption performance of several branches and localities nationwide across the country.

In the first half of this year, the inspection sector conducted 4,724 administrative inspections and over 89,000 intensive inspections in certain fields with a focus on land management, capital construction and budget management and spending.

The inspections discovered the inappropriate use of VND12.2 trillion and 452 ha of land.
From January 1 to May 31 this year, 100 corruption cases were put on trial with 196 defendants, the People’s Supreme Procuracy said.
