Indonesia, Vietnam increase military cooperation

(VOV) - Vietnam and Indonesia should establish a strategic dialogue on national defence policy at the deputy ministerial level to realize their 2010 cooperation MoU.

Defence Minister Gen. Phung Quang Thanh made the proposal at a reception for Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin, Deputy Minister of National Defence of Indonesia, in Hanoi on May 27.

Thanh said the Ministry of National Defence of Vietnam will send a delegation of senior officers to Indonesia to share experience in developing the defence industry.

He spoke highly of Indonesia’s initiatives within ASEAN and expressed hope that it will continue to introduce new initiatives to strengthen solidarity and promote ASEAN’s central role in addressing regional issues, as well as in building the ASEAN community by 2015.

He also proposed that the two countries’ militaries increase the exchange of delegations at all levels, especially between their young officers.

For his part, Sjamsoeddin said that Indonesia has established a training centre for its peacekeeping force and is willing to share its experience in the field with Vietnam.

He introduced to General Thanh on military aircraft CN-295 – a transportation plane that uses Airbus components and is assembled by Indonesia’s PT Dirgantara Group.

During the visit, the Indonesian Deputy Minister of Defence made a tour of major tourist attractions in Hanoi and HCM City.
