Economy remains in a fix

(VOV) - National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung has pointed out weaknesses of the national economy, saying it is not out of the woods yet.

Despite improvements, the economy is still coping with challenges, including the unsteady macroeconomy, a slow pace of bank restructuring and bad debt settlement, and an excess of industrial inventories, Hung told the National Assembly at its fifth session in Hanoi on May 20.

He noted that the number of businesses that has went bankrupt and suspended operations keeps rising, and employees find it difficult to get jobs and raise incomes.

“The situation requires us to work out effective, synchronous solutions to overcome challenges and successfully implement the country’s socio-economic development tasks for 2013,” said Hung.

He asked deputies to thoroughly examine issues and offer high opinions to make the NA session a success, living up to people’s expectations.

Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc presented a government report reviewing the implementation of development tasks in 2012 and the first four months of this year, and suggesting major solutions for the Government’s performance in the remaining months of 2013.

During a more than a month’s sitting, NA deputies are scheduled to approve 10 bills and resolutions, and give opinions on 7 other bills, including important ones.

High on the agenda will be debates on amendments to the 1982 Constitution and the revised Land Law, as well as votes of confidence for key post-holders elected or ratified by the legislature.

NA deputies will elect the new Minister of Finance and General Auditor who have been assigned to new posts.
