Vietnam to help Laos hold training courses for NA deputies

Vietnam will continue to work closely with Laos in building a draft agreement on supporting Laos in organising training courses for deputies to the National Assembly and People’s Councils in the 2016-2020 period.

Tran Van Tuy, head of the NA Committee for Deputy Affairs, made the statement while briefing Laos’ NA Chairwoman Pany Yathotou on outcomes of his delegation’s talks with a delegation from the Laos Institute of Legislation Research under the Lao NA Standing Committee in Vientiane on July 14. 

Major topics discussed by the two sides during the talks included the reality of law building in Vietnam; the rights and obligations of provincial People’s Council; the People’s Council’s supervision over the socio-economic development of a locality; and experience in the settlement of hot issues. 

For her part, the top Lao legislator said that her country hopes to learn from Vietnam’s experience in operating a NA, especially in law building. She lauded the visit of the Vietnamese delegation, as well as experience they shared, which contributes to improving the capacity of Lao deputies to the NA and People’s Councils at all levels. 

She thanked Vietnam’s NA for sending a delegation to share experience with Laos , while expressing hope that in the future, the two sides will further foster cooperation to enhance the effectiveness of law building in both countries. 

She leader also lauded the topics that the Vietnamese officials discussed, stating that those related to the operation of the People’s Council are useful for Laos, as this is the first year the country has people’s councils in provinces and centrally-run cities. 

Appreciating Vietnam’s support to Laos’ NA over the past year, she said the assistance has not only helped strengthen relations between the two legislative bodies but also contributed to fostering the special ties and comprehensive cooperation between the two countries.
