VFF leader welcomes German parliamentary group

VOV.VN - On February 29,  Vietnam Fatherland Front (VFF) President Nguyen Thien Nhan received Thomas Oppermann, Chairman of the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) parliamentary group in Hanoi.

Nhan highlighted the SPD parliamentary group’s visit as a great contribution to deepening the two countries’ mutual understanding and cooperation.

Vietnam greatly values its strategic partnership with Germany which has been grown in such areas as such as politics, economics, culture and education-training, he told his guest.

Germany has been Vietnam’s top EU trade partner for years and trade hit US$7.8 billion in 2014 and exceeded US$7.3 billion in the first ten months of last year.

However, German investment in Vietnam remains modest just about US$1.5 billion or 0.5% of foreign investment.

He said he hopes that Oppermann, Chairman of the parliamentary group of the SPD – one of the two biggest parties in Germany – will help German parliamentarians and officials better understand and back Vietnam at international forums.

Germany is also the biggest and most effective partner of Vietnam in education-training and science-technology, he said, citing the Vietnam-Germany University project a typical case in point.

The official asked the German government to offer more favourable conditions for Vietnamese students and postgraduates in the EU nation.

Thomas Oppermann said his group visit to Vietnam shows his country’s due attention to the Southeast Asian nation.

The strategic partnership will benefit both sides in the areas of economics, politics and education-training, he said, adding that economic development priorities is intensifying overseas investments including those from Vietnam.
