PM Phuc hosts ASEAN chief, Myanmar Vice President
VOV.VN - Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc received ASEAN Secretary General Lim Jock Hoi and Vice President of Myanmar U Henry Van Thio on the fringes of the sixth Greater Mekong Subregion Summit (GMS-6) in Hanoi on March 31.
He said he hopes the ASEAN Secretariat will further enhance its function of researching and proposing policies which serve as a basis for member countries’ consultation.
The ASEAN Secretariat also needs to intensify supervision and coordination regarding the implementation of the grouping’s agreements based on the principle of consensus, he noted.
The PM underlined the ASEAN Secretariat’s tasks of reinforcing solidarity among member countries, and maintaining the central role in an open, transparent and rules-based regional architecture on the basis of respect for the interests of each other.
Vietnam will do its utmost to contribute to the regional grouping's development while asking the ASEAN Secretary General to coordinate and offer the best possible conditions for Vietnam to fulfill its role of ASEAN Chair by 2020.
For his part, the ASEAN Secretary General said he believes that Vietnam will fulfill its role as ASEAN Chair by 2020, and expressed his hope that PM Phuc will ponder over financial support in order to improve effectiveness of the ASEAN Secretariat’s future activities.
Meeting with Vice President of Myanmar U Henry Van Thio, PM Phuc congratulated Myanmar on the country’s new president and praised the Myanmar government’s socio-economic development in recent times.
He said hopes that the government and relevant agencies of Myanmar would continue facilitating operations of Vietnamese businesses who are carrying out projects in Myanmar, there contributing to local socio-economic development and further strengthening the two countries’ friendship.
As ASEAN members, both nations should continue their closer coordination at multilateral forums for mutual benefit, and for peace and prosperity in the regional and the world.
Vice President U Henry Van Thio spoke of his appreciation for the role of Vietnam as the host of the GMS-6 summit and the 10th Cambodia-Laos-Vietnam Development Triangle Summit (CLV-10).
He said Myanmar will continue stepping up cooperation with Vietnam across a variety of fields, especially in trade and investment.
He expressed his hope that the two sides will continue maintaininghigh-level delegation exchange as the good way of bringing bilateral ties to a higher level.
