Paraguay marks 20th anniversary of diplomatic ties with Vietnam

(VOV) - A meeting was held in Asuncion, Paraguay on August 3 to mark the 20th anniversary of diplomatic ties between Paraguay and Vietnam.

Addressing the event, Ambassador to Argentina and Paraguay Nguyen Dinh Thao expressed his delight at sound relations of the two countries over the last two decades.

He underscored that bilateral economic relations have developed rapidly with trading revenue reaching almost US$100 million last year, six fold higher than in 2010. However it is still far below the two countries’ potential.

The figure hit nearly US$65 million in the first 7 months of this year, of which Vietnam’s exports to Paraguay reached US$35 million.

For his part, Paraguayan Deputy Foreign Minister Oscar Cabello Sarubbi reviewed important landmarks in bilateral relations in recent times, including President Fernando Lugo Mendez’s visit to Hanoi in March 2011, the first political consultation in Hanoi in April and the establishment of the Paraguay-Vietnam Parliamentary Friendship Association in July.

He appreciated Vietnam’s role in the development of ASEAN.

At the reception given to ambassador Thao on the same day, Foreign Minister Eladio Loizaga spoke highly of the results of the first political consultation in April.

He revealed of his visit to Vietnam this year at the invitation of Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh.

Ambassador Thao asserted that Vietnam pays attention to fostering multifaceted cooperation with Paraguay, especially trade and cultural exchanges.

Diverse activities have been held on the occasion. An exhibition on Vietnamese photos and handicraft products has opened at the Cabildo National Cultural Centre.

Meanwhile, ambassador Thao had talks with professors and students of of the University of Integration of the Americas (UNIDA) about Vietnam’s integration and development process and relations between the two countries.
