Young Vietnamese wins int’l photo awards
(VOV) - Nguyen Hoang Hiep has won two prizes in the 2013 Sony World Photography Awards (SWPA) with his photograph entitiled ‘Storm.
The SWPA is a prestigious annual international photography competition organized by the World Photography Association. This year’s event received 122,000 entries from 170 countries and territories around the world.
Entries were divided into six categories in professional, open and student levels.
Hiep’s enhanced photo “Storm” won the award for the best technique, as well as first prize in the open category.
The image is set in a field of weeds in the suburbs of Hanoi, showing a young girl absorbed in reading a book as a storm of dark clouds looms over the horizon.
Hiep said he only took up photography a year ago is very surprised to be the winner of the Open category.
The Hanoi-born amateur photographer is currently a fourth-year student at the Architecture Faculty of Dong Do University in Hanoi.
In addition to the SWPA prizes, “Storm” has qualified Hiep to enter the final round of the Smithsonian 2012 competition, which attracts photographers from 113 nations, the 2013 Macquarie Photography Competition in Australia and the the 2012 Golden Camera Awards in Ukraine.
