Yala women keep tradition of Bungah Sireh alive

Thai-Muslim women of the southern province of Yala have continued the tradition of “Bungah Sireh”, a type of flower arrangement, engaging in a competition to find the most beautiful creation.

The competition was divided into four groups of three individuals each. Each team had to create a Bungah Sireh to be judged based on its beauty, creativity, technique and design.

They were also judged on team work, materials preparation and efficiency.

The locally known Sireh is actually a Betel plant that is appreciated for its heart shape and is commonly used in engagement processions and other joyous occasions.

Bungah Sireh arrangements are elaborate and multi-tiered, rising three to nine tiers but always an odd number. How each leaf is woven is considered a special skill.
