Writer Que Mai wins two French literary awards

VOV.VN - Vietnamese author Nguyen Phan Que Mai has won two prestigious French literary awards for her English-language novels "The Mountains Sing" and "Dust Child".

Dust Child received the “Prix de littérature étrangère” (Foreign Literature Prize) at the “Créteil en poche” book fair in Paris. The novel explores the Amerasian experience, focusing on children born to Vietnamese mothers and American military fathers.

Held annually since 2009, the “Créteil en poche” fair is dedicated to pocket-sized books and attracts around 20,000 readers. Major publishers such as HarperCollins, Pocket, J’ai lu, and Points also participated in the event, which is organised by La Griffe Noire bookstore.

Que Mai’s debut novel The Mountains Sing was honored with the Meilleur Roman Points prize for Best Novel of the Year. The fictional family saga gives voice to rarely documented events in Vietnamese history.

The Meilleur Roman Points prize is voted on by a jury of 150 readers, selected from over 300 pocket-format books published by Points over the past year. The award is coordinated by Version Femina magazine.

Both novels were originally written in English by Que Mai and translated into French by acclaimed translator Sarah Tardy, with publishing rights acquired by Éditions Charleston.

Speaking at the award ceremonies, Que Mai shared that books have given her strength to overcome hardship. She expressed gratitude to her parents for buying her first books, and to the French readers and juries who supported her work.

In addition to her international success, Que Mai is also a poet and translator, with several poetry collections that have received recognition in Vietnam. Dust Child and The Mountains Sing have garnered multiple awards and became bestsellers in the United States.
