Visual perception explored in new ‘Optical Illusion’ exhibition
VOV.VN -The Japan Foundation Center for Cultural Exchange in Vietnam officially opened its “Optical Illusion” exhibition on July 2, featuring 53 intricate models created by Professor Kokichi Sugihara.

This one-of-a-kind display invites visitors to explore the fascinating and often counterintuitive world of visual perception.
Although the human eye is typically seen as a reliable witness, thanks to its three-dimensional visual processing, Professor Sugihara skillfully exploits the “blind spots” in our perception, crafting illusions that defy logic. His creations offer both a visually arresting experience and a prompt for deeper philosophical reflection.
Beyond their visual intrigue, the professor’s works also stimulate scientific curiosity, revealing the elegant interplay between mathematics, art, and how humans perceive the world around them.
Since the early 2000s, Professor Sugihara has dedicated himself to researching optical illusions, with his works exhibited across Japan and internationally.
His creations have also been featured on major Japanese television programmes such as NHK’s DESIGN TALK plus and Arashi ni Shiyagare, hosted by the popular music group Arashi, where they have been warmly received by audiences.
In addition, his works are on display at some of the world’s most prestigious museums of science and art, including the National Palace Museum in Taiwan (China).
Running until August 24, the exhibition offers Vietnamese audiences a rare opportunity to experience a sophisticated fusion of mathematical precision and artistic imagination.
