Vietnamese, Korean dancers to perform Myth of Woman

Artists of Vietnam and the Republic of Korea will present a dance programme honouring women at the HCM City Opera House on November 28.

The Myth of Woman programme is organised by the HCM City Union of Friendship Organisations and the HCM City Ballet Symphony Orchestra and Opera (HBSO).

Directed by Jung Sun Goo, the performance will include seven chapters featuring a story of a woman from her childhood, youth, motherhood and old age.

The story will include dance performances choreographed by RoK dancer Chun Yoo Oh.

She created the moves based on poems praising the beauty of women by Vietnamese and Korean poets like Ho Xuan Huong and Hwang Jin Yi.

The dancer will also perform the routines together with dancers from the RoK-based Mulmatdol Dance Group and the HBSO Ballet, while Korean soprano Cho Hae Ryong will present poems on stage.

Chun graduated from Ewha Woman’s University in the RoK, where she obtained a PhD in art. Then she studied analysis of movement at the University of Surrey in the UK.

From 1991 to 2004, she worked as a professor at Seowon University in the RoK and choreographed major shows.

She has choreographed and danced in Ariang Saigon at the city’s Opera House in 2014, and Cross-Bow and Promise to 800 in 2015, both based on Vietnamese historical stories.

The programme’s music is a blend of Korean, Vietnamese and Western styles by Korean composer Kang Sang Goo.

Kang will play piano along with the Vietnamese dan bau (monochord) player Le Hoai Phuong and clarinetist Dao Nhat Quang, and the Korean gayageum (Korean string instrument with 12 strings) player Ha Sera and percussionist Kim Ji Hye.
