Vietnamese jazz album connects folk music with international artists

VOV.VN - A Tet-themed jazz album by Vietnamese singer Quynh Anh brings together folk melodies from across Vietnam and contemporary jazz, featuring collaborations with Grammy-winning and international artists, to mark Tet, the Lunar New Year in Vietnam.

Titled “Em ơi mùa xuân đến rồi đó”, the release reflects the idea of revisiting familiar spring songs through a jazz lens. It is Quynh Anh’s fifth studio album and her third vinyl release, produced by bkproduction and issued ahead of the Lunar New Year of the Year of the Horse in 2026.

The album takes its name from the opening line of the song “Mùa xuân đến rồi đó” (Spring has arrived) by composer Tran Chung, a work widely associated with the voice of Meritorious Artist Thu Phuong. Drawing on that musical memory, Quynh Anh presents a seven-track journey marking the arrival of spring.

The album’s defining feature lies in its fusion of folk material from Vietnam’s three regions with contemporary jazz. Quynh Anh said jazz is not used to showcase technique, but as a medium that expands emotional space, allowing Vietnamese melodies to engage in a subtle dialogue with international music.

The project features international jazz musicians including Kerry Politzer, Joseph Patrick Moore, Oli Hayhurst and Eyal Sela. Drummer Dan Pugach, winner of the Grammy Award for Best Jazz Album in 2025 with Bianca Reimagined: Music for Paws and Persistence, also contributed to the album. He is joined by renowned seven-string jazz guitarist Ron Jackson and veteran trumpeter Tony Guerrero.

Against these new arrangements, Quynh Anh’s vocals move through familiar Tet emotions, anticipation of reunion, gentle nostalgia and hopes for a peaceful new year. For the singer, a highlight of the project was introducing Vietnamese folk melodies into a jazz framework and sharing them with international collaborators.

“Jazz is familiar to them, while Vietnamese folk music is ours,” she said. “We meet in the music and explore each other’s worlds.”
