Vietnamese countertenor awarded special prize at international music festival

VOV.VN - Tran Tung Anh, who is one of the rare local male singers possessing a castrato voice, won a special prize in the youth’s opera category at the Qingyin award-international youth music festival which recently concluded in Hangzhou of China.

During the competition Tung Anh sang a mashup of famous Vietnamese chamber songs, including Xuân chiến khu (Spring on Battlefield), Người lái đò trên sông poko (Ferryman on the Poko River), and Trường ca Sông Lô (Epic of the Lo River).

The 28-year-old singer initially embarked on his singing career in 2017 when he participated in The Voice singing contest.

Although he only made it to the Top 13 of the competition, he was still recognised as a rare phenomenon in Vietnamese music for possessing the remarkable ability to sing in a soaring female soprano range.

The singer later participated in many music game shows and went on to release several small-scale projects, some of which have gone on to garner millions of views.

The Qingyin award-international youth music festival was held from July 19 to 22 in Hangzhou, attracting the participation of nearly 600 contestants worldwide.

Another Vietnamese contestant in the competition, Ly Mi Cuong of Mong ethnicity, received first prize in the musical instrument category.
