Vietnamese art draws international attention at London Asian Art Week

VOV.VN - Works by four contemporary Vietnamese artists drew attention from collectors, auction houses, and art enthusiasts from the UK and internationally at Vietnam- Enchanting Beauty exhibition, held from October 31 to November 5 at the prestigious auction house Sotheby’s London.

Organized by Thang Long Art Gallery within the framework of the 28th London Asian Art Week (Asian Art in London – AAL), the event is the gallery’s second participation in this esteemed event, following the success of A Glimpse of Vietnam last year.

The exhibition featured standout works by four contemporary Vietnamese painters, including Hong Viet Dung (member of the Gang of Five), Nguyen Thanh Binh, Vu Cong Dien, and Ngo Van Sac. Each artist, with their distinctive style and technique, offered a unique perspective reflecting a profound artistic response to the captivating beauty of Vietnam. The works presented a dialogue between nature and humanity in harmonious, serene settings, embodying a quiet resistance to the anxieties and turbulence of the modern world.

Notably, Ngo Van Sac’s wood-burning painting Indochina (2024) was nominated among the top three in the Modern and Contemporary category by the AAL 2025 organizers. The piece, alongside Sac’s broader wood-burning art, was discussed at the panel Tradition in Contemporary Art on November 2 at Sotheby’s London, with participation from Thang Long Art Gallery, Lloyd Choi Gallery (South Korea), Slaats Fine Arts (UK), and Schoeni Projects (Hong Kong, China).

The exhibition also included an Art Talk, highlighting the works of the four featured artists and contemporary Vietnamese art more broadly, leaving a strong impression on collectors and international audiences.

Sophie Kempson, Programme Development Director at AAL said that Thang Long Art Gallery’s exhibition at last year’s AAL received enthusiastic reception, with many works sold to both new and returning collectors. She said this year’s exhibition drew even greater attention, with numerous pieces sold to first-time collectors. Kempson emphasized that these results show growing international interest in contemporary Vietnamese art and its potential in the London market.

According to Nguyen Dinh Long, representing Thang Long Art Gallery,  the gallery participated in AAL to further promote contemporary Vietnamese art internationally. He noted that AAL provides an excellent platform for introducing Vietnam’s art and culture alongside major artistic hubs such as Japan, China, the Republic of Korea (RoK), India, and the Middle East.

The event featured both gallery exhibitions and major auction sessions at Sotheby’s, Bonhams, and Christie’s. These auctions, attended by numerous international collectors and art enthusiasts, offered a significant opportunity to showcase Vietnamese art. According to Nguyen Dinh Long, Vietnam -Enchanting Beauty attracted collectors from multiple countries, not only from the UK and Europe but also from the United States and Middle Eastern countries such as Lebanon and Saudi Arabia, as well as other parts of Asia.

The exhibition drew attention within London’s art scene, with the opening attended by the AAL Chair and board members, representatives from Sotheby’s and Bonhams, international art experts, and editors from leading art magazines.

Founded in 1998, AAL is an annual event designed to promote Asian art in London, with the participation from galleries, major auction houses, Asian art cultural organizations, and scholars from the UK, Europe, and worldwide. Each year, AAL exhibitions and auctions draw top curators from leading museums and galleries, collectors, artists, art experts, and international visitors.

This year, AAL featured around 20 exhibitions and auctions covering Asian art, including Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Islamic, and Indian art, held simultaneously at Sotheby’s, Bonhams, and Christie’s.
