Vietnam promotes cultural diplomacy at ‘Vietnam Phở Day’ in Beijing

VOV.VN - The Embassy of Vietnam in China, in coordination with Vietnamese restaurants operating locally, organised the “Vietnam Phở Day” event on February 5.

The event is designed to promote Vietnam’s national brand through the culinary heritage of phở, strengthen cultural exchanges between Vietnam, China and international friends, and support Vietnamese businesses in introducing their products and services.

More than 170 guests attended the event, including Vietnam’s Ambassador to China Pham Thanh Binh and his spouse, along with ambassadors and spouses from several other countries.

Speaking at the event, Ambassador Pham Thanh Binh said phở has become a “national dish” and a cultural symbol of Vietnam. Through Vietnam Phở Day, the embassy aims to build additional bridges connecting international friends with Vietnamese culinary culture, thereby enhancing mutual understanding and strengthening people-to-people exchanges.

The ambassador emphasised that cultural diplomacy and culinary diplomacy are practical and accessible approaches that help promote Vietnam’s image and people amid deep international integration. He also expressed confidence that activities such as Vietnam Phở Day would continue helping share Vietnamese cultural values and contribute to strengthening friendship, cooperation and long-term ties between Vietnam and the international community.

In a warm and friendly atmosphere, participants directly joined the preparation of phở and sampled other Vietnamese specialities such as fresh spring rolls and bánh mì.

Speaking to the press, Political Counsellor of the Embassy of Laos in China Phouva Samounty said that in Laos, phở is not only a popular choice among office workers for its rich flavour and convenience at lunchtime, but also commonly appears alongside traditional dishes during major festive occasions.

According to Phouva Samounty, the event introduces Vietnamese phở to international friends while affirming the dish as one of Southeast Asia’s notable cultural symbols.

He added that Vietnam Phở Day has attracted interest from local residents and international visitors in China who wish to experience Vietnamese cuisine and learn more about Vietnam’s culture and tourism, thereby helping create opportunities for trade, investment and tourism cooperation.

Trinh Linh Linh, Deputy General Director of IPS FOODS Beijing, said she had previously heard that Vietnamese phở was delicious but only had the opportunity to taste it at the event. She expressed hope to visit Vietnam in the future to gain deeper insight into the country, its people and culinary culture.

The event also highlighted Vietnam as a country rich in traditional identity, dynamic, internationally integrated and hospitable, contributing to stronger understanding and connections between Vietnam and partners and international friends in China.
