Vietnam joins ASEAN textile heritage exhibition in RoK
VOV.VN -The Vietnam Museum of Ethnology will join the ASEAN Culture House (KF-ACH) in presenting an exhibition titled “Weaving Hands, Women’s Time: Textile Traditions in ASEAN”, highlighting the heritage of Southeast Asian women.
The exhibition runs from March 25 to August 30 at the ASEAN Culture House in Busan, the Republic of Korea (RoK), featuring traditional textiles crafted by women across Southeast Asia and capturing everyday life and cultural memory in the region.
According to the museum, textiles in Southeast Asia go beyond handicrafts and represent history and diverse cultural identities. Items such as Cambodia’s Krama scarf, Timor-Leste’s Tais cloth, Malaysia’s Songket weaving and the Philippines’ Piña fibre technique are sources of national pride and have been inscribed by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage.
Cross-border cultural connections are also evident in shared techniques such as batik wax-dyeing and the traditional attire Kebaya, which was jointly recognised by five Southeast Asian countries in 2024.
Throughout these traditions, women play a central role. From spinning and dyeing to stitching intricate patterns, they preserve everyday life practices while passing on aesthetic values and cultural memory across generations.
The exhibition invites the public to rediscover textile traditions as a living and contemporary cultural expression of Southeast Asia.
In addition to the Vietnam Museum of Ethnology, participating institutions include the Vietnam Fine Arts Museum, the International Information and Networking Centre for Intangible Cultural Heritage in the Asia-Pacific Region (UNESCO-ICHCAP), regional textile museums and ASEAN embassies in the RoK.
