Vietnam hosts 2014 AFC Women’s Asian Cup

(VOV) - The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has officially authorized Vietnam to host the finals of the 2014 Women’s Asian Cup.

The Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) made the announcement in Hanoi on May 29.

This presents an opportunity for the national women’s football squad to vie for a berth to the 2015 World Cup in Canada, if they are among the top five teams in the tournament’s final round.

AFC representatives will fly to Vietnam to check the playing fields and conduct the necessary procedures before signing the contract with the VFF to organize the event.

In the final round of the 2014 Women’s Asian Cup, eight teams will be divided into two groups, and the best two group winners will compete for first, second, third and fourth places in the championship. These top four teams will qualify for the World Cup 2015.

The final ticket to World Cup 2015 will be determined by a play-off match between two third place teams in each group.

Seven of the eight teams are three group winners of the qualifying round (Vietnam, Thailand and Myanmar) and four teams that went straight into the finals: Australia, Japan, China and the Republic of Korea.

The eighth team will be named after the group A matches on June 5.
