Vietnam defeats Singapore 3-0 at U21 int’l football tourney

Vietnam U21 football team defeated Singapore 3-0 on the first day of Thanh Nien Newspaper’s 2014 U21 International Football Tournament in Can Tho City on October 19.

Vietnam, the reigning champion of the annual tournament, had more ball possession and attacks in the first half but no goal was scored.

Six minutes into the first half, Manh Hung shot past Singapore defenders to defeat goalkeeper Redzuan and scored the first goal for Vietnam. Three minutes later, Salleh got a second yellow card and was sent off the match, leaving a weaker Singapore struggling with Vietnam’s attacks. Quach Tan scored the second goal for Vietnam in the 63th minute after receiving an easy pass from Phi Son on the left side.

Four minutes later, Quach Tan had a long shot for Van Dai and scored a goal from a close distance.

Defeating Singapore, Vietnam earned three points and will play Thailand on October 23.

Earlier on the same day, Malaysia defeated Australia 2-1.

Six teams are competing in two groups at the tournament from October 19-28, including Group A with Vietnam, Singapore and Thailand and Group B with Hoang Anh Gia Lai – Arsenal JMG, Malaysia and Sydney. Two leading teams in each group will advance to semifinals and the rest two compete for fifth place.

The winning team will get US$12,000. The runner-up and third place will get $7,000 and $5,000 respectively.
