UNESCO acknowledges Vietnam’s progress in conserving Thang Long Imperial Citadel
VOV.VN - As part of the 47th session of the World Heritage Committee under the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), held in France, the Committee on July 10 adopted a decision on the conservation and promotion of the heritage value of the Thang Long Imperial Citadel, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The decision acknowledges Vietnam’s positive progress in implementing the Committee’s recommendations from the 2024 session. These included the Central Axis Vision, the archaeological research strategy, and the broader interpretation strategy for the site’s heritage value.
Of particular note, the Committee recommended that Vietnam continue to promote interdisciplinary research following the removal of certain structures previously approved by the Committee. This research should contribute to the refinement and advancement of the Central Axis Vision, with an emphasis on restoring the Kinh Thien Palace and its central space.
In recognition of Vietnam’s proactive, constructive efforts and its respect for the World Heritage Committee’s recommendations, a delegation from the World Heritage Centre is scheduled to visit Vietnam in late July. The mission will review the country’s implementation efforts, provide guidance on preparing scientific documentation for the site's state of conservation report, and offer advice on the restoration strategy for Kinh Thien Palace and its central space.
Vietnam is expected to submit the final report by February 1, 2026, for consideration at the 48th session of the World Heritage Committee.
