Second book street set to open in HCM City in mid-October

HCMC’s second book street on Nguyen Dong Chi Street in Tan Phu Ward, District 7 is scheduled to come into operation from October 20, according to the district authority.

The new book street costing nearly VND14 billion (US$616,086) will be operational from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. on weekdays, creating an open space for people to look for new books or simply have a cup of coffee.

The second book street featuring some 20 book stalls, coffee shops and smart restrooms is expected to promote reading culture to more than 300,000 residents in districts 7, 2, Binh Chanh and Nha Be.

The current book street on Nguyen Van Binh road adjacent to two of HCMC’s landmarks, the Post Office and the Notre Dame Cathedral, was put into operation in January last year.

Since then, the site has become popular among local youths, students, photographers, foreign tourists, and especially bookworms.

The Department of Information and Communications has suggested every two or three districts should have one book street to meet high demand of readers.
