Rules and Rebellion explores nearly 300 years of musical innovation

VOV.VN - The Sun Symphony Orchestra (SSO) will present Rules and Rebellion concert at the Ho Guom Opera House on October 23 to explore nearly 300 years of music through masterpieces by George Frideric Händel and Johann Sebastian Bach Händel, alongside a contemporary work by Louis Andriessen.

The four works offer contrasting perspectives on musical creativity, from the grandeur and intricate craftsmanship of the Baroque era to the experimental spirit of contemporary composition.

The concert opens with Händel’s Water Music – Suite No. 2 in D major, HWV 349, composed for King George I’s journey along the River Thames in 1717. Its brilliant trumpets and horns, stately melodies and lively exchanges between instrumental groups evoke the festive atmosphere of a royal celebration.

Händel returns with Music for the Royal Fireworks, HWV 351, written in 1749 to celebrate the Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle, which ended the War of the Austrian Succession. Composed for an outdoor royal celebration, the work is distinguished by its powerful brass and woodwind writing and grand ceremonial character.

Bach’s Orchestral Suite No. 2 in B minor, BWV 1067 offers a different expression of Baroque artistry. Drawing on French court dances, including the Rondeau, Sarabande, Bourrée, Polonaise and Menuet, the suite combines intricate musical construction with expressive interplay between the solo flute and strings. Its lively final movement, Badinerie, is particularly renowned for its rapid pace and technical demands.

The programme takes a radical turn with Andriessen’s Workers Union (1975), a work that challenges conventional approaches to composition and performance.

Rather than prescribing fixed pitches, the score gives performers considerable freedom in choosing notes while establishing rhythmic patterns and the direction of melodic movement. This freedom demands close coordination: the musicians must maintain rhythmic precision as repeated patterns, shifting accents and rising intensity create a forceful, driving sound.

The work thus sets individual freedom against collective discipline, offering a striking contrast with the Baroque pieces.

By placing Händel and Bach alongside Andriessen, SSO creates a dialogue between seemingly opposing musical philosophies. While the Baroque composers explored creativity within established conventions, Andriessen challenged those conventions to develop a different form of musical order.
