RoK and Vietnam to co-produce musical about President Ho Chi Minh

VOV.VN - The Vietnam National Drama Theatre and a creative team from the Republic of Korea are undertaking the special artistic project Cafe Bánh Mì, a musical about President Ho Chi Minh, in celebration of Vietnam’s 80th National Day (September 2, 1945 - 2025).

Park Hyun Woo, artistic director and representative of the Korean team, says Cafe Bánh Mì is a musical work that honors and celebrates President Ho Chi Minh - a great, compassionate leader of Vietnam. The title of the musical symbolises the humble, familiar foods representing ordinary, unnamed people who quietly sacrificed national independence and freedom.

In the musical, the spirit and ideals of the Vietnamese leader are portrayed as a unifying force that touches all corners of society and every social class. This message is embodied in each character - ordinary, uncelebrated individuals who represent countless unsung heroes. It is this very symbolism that inspired Park to choose the title Cafe Bánh Mì.

The artwork portrays the patriotic spirit, bravery, and yearning for independence of the Vietnamese people during the turbulent period leading up to the August Revolution in 1945. It vividly depicts the harsh social conditions of war, poverty, and loss through the lens of the petty bourgeoisie who not only contributed financially but were also ready to sacrifice their lives for the revolutionary cause.

Alongside Cafe Bánh Mì, the Vietnam National Drama Theatre is about to present to the public the art programme “Bác Hồ một tình yêu bao la” (Uncle Ho - An Unbounded Love).

“The programme is not only a tribute to history but also a strategic move to connect performing arts with tourism,” says People’s Artist Kieu Minh Hieu, representative of the Vietnam National Drama Theatre.

The performances are planned to be staged at cultural sites such as the Presidential Palace Historical Site and the Ho Chi Minh Museum, with durations of 30–35 minutes, suitable for visitors.

“We aim to create profound cultural experiences within historical spaces. The figure of President Ho Chi Minh will appear on stage as an emotional and historical highlight to promote the nation’s values and spirit,” emphasises Hieu.
