Powerlifters clinch two official tickets to Rio Paralympics

Vietnamese powertlifters have secured two official tickets to the Rio 2016 Paralympics after winning two gold medals at the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Powerlifting World Cup in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

The tournament, opening on February 24, was part of the qualifying round for the Rio 2016 Paralympics, which will take place in Brazil this September. 

Successfully lifting 180kg, Le Van Cong pocketed a gold medal in the men’s 49kg category. 


The other gold went to Nguyen Binh An, who lifted 180kg in the men’s 54kg category. 

In the women’s 50kg, Dang Thi Linh Phuong won a silver medal with a lift of 97kg. 

Coach Nguyen Hong Phuc said seven Vietnamese athletes are set to compete in the men’s 49, 54, 59 and 65kg categories, and the women’s 45, 50 and 55kg categories. 

The IPC Powerlifting World Cup has attracted 300 athletes from 41 countries and territories. It will conclude on February 28.
