Portrait of Red Dao generations wins top prize at National Geographic contest
VOV.VN - A striking portrait of a Red Dao woman sitting beside her great-grandchild in a dim, smoky room in northern mountainous Lao Cai province has claimed the grand prize at the National Geographic Traveller (UK) Photography Competition 2025.

Captured by Justin Cliffe from the UK, the intimate image of two generations of the Red Dao ethnic minority group captivated the judges, standing out among thousands of entries to take the top award in the People category.
“The colours, light, and textures work really well,” the judging panel said in a statement released on May 29, adding that, “this is such an intimate moment between generations that captures so much beauty and humanity.”
Embroidery has been handed down through generations of the Red Dao in Vietnam, according to National Geographic.
Other winning entries feature an eye-like geothermal pool in Iceland, a family-run eatery in Tibet, and a dramatic encounter between a Bonelli’s eagle and a fox in Spain.
Now in its 12th year, the National Geographic Traveller Annual Photography Competition attracts a diverse range of photographers from amateurs to professionals across the UK and Ireland. The contest features six categories, namely landscape, people, wildlife, food, city life, and portfolio.
