One-month festival showcases vibrant cultures of Vietnam’s ethnic groups
VOV.VN - The Vietnam National Village for Ethnic Culture and Tourism, on the outskirts of Hanoi, is hosting a month-long series of cultural activities from April 1 to May 3, celebrating Vietnam’s ethnic diversity.
The festival involves over 100 participants from 16 ethnic groups living inside the village and coincides with key national occasions, including Vietnamese Ethnic Groups’ Culture Day (April 19), Hung Kings’ Commemoration Day, National Reunification Day (April 30), and International Workers’ Day (May 1).
Visitors will have the opportunity to experience the “Colour of Lai Chau,” a recreated highland market where they can enjoy traditional cuisine, participate in folk games, and watch songs and dances performed by Mong, Lu, Thai, and Giay ethnic groups.
A photo exhibition titled “Vibrant Colours of the Market” presents 50 striking images that capture the life and beauty of the highlands. Ethnic rituals, such as the Giay forest god worship and the Lu buffalo spirit ceremony from Lai Chau province, will also be re-enacted during the festival, providing an immersive glimpse into traditional spiritual practices.
The festival further introduces visitors to Dong Ho folk paintings, recently recognised as a UNESCO intangible cultural heritage, and showcases the culture of the Central Highlands region through gong performances and the re-enactment of the Chol Chnam Thmay festival of the Khmer ethnic minority.
Cultural exchanges among Central Highlands ethnic groups, folk song and dance performances of northern minorities, and weekend activities highlighting traditions in each cultural space add to the vibrant atmosphere.
The festival is expected to offer an engaging, immersive experience that celebrates the richness and diversity of Vietnam’s ethnic cultures through music, art, rituals, and interactive activities.
