Mixed fortunes for Vietnamese athletes at Taekwondo champs
After three days of competitions, Vietnam have pocketed four silver and two bronze medals at the World Taekwondo Poomsae Championships in Tunja, Columbia.
Trio Nguyen Thi Thu Van, Chau Tuyet Van and Nguyen Thi Le Kim took a silver in the women’s team under-29 event on December 9, getting 7,680 points in the final.
The Vietnamese athletes failed to defend their title, losing five points to the winners-Maleki Aderani Nastaran, Mollamadadkhani Colsoum and Ghaderian Bahareh of Iran.
Third place went to the team from the Philippines.
Later Nguyen Thuy Xuan Linh and Le Thanh Trung bagged a second silver for Vietnam in the mixed pair freestyle event.
They earned 7,330 points, close behind champions Saux Collanted Bruno and Yi Wu Acuy Winnie of Peru who won with 7,470 points.
The Filipino duo grabbed third place.
On December 8, Lien Thi Tuyet Mai took a silver in the women’s individual U29 event while Chau Tuyet Van earned another, her second at the tournament, in the women’s U29 freestyle category.
Earlier, Le Anh Minh ranked third in the men’s individual U29 event and Nguyen Minh Van shared third place in the men’s U17 individual pool.
Vietnam came to the tournament with 13 athletes and expects to win at least two gold medals.
Hopefuls Nguyen Dinh Toan and Nguyen Minh Tu will defend their title on December 10.
