Mannekin-Pis wears traditional Vietnamese costume

The Vietnamese embassy in Belgium presented an ao dai (traditional long dress) and khan xep (turban) to the famous Mannekin-Pis statue in Brussels on September 29.

This is part of the Vietnam Culture Week taking place in the city from September 29-October 5 to mark the 40th anniversary of Vietnam-Belgium diplomatic ties.

The silk ao dai and khan xep, designed by the Thai Tuan Textile and Garment Company, feature embroidered golden apricot blossoms on a background of blue water.

The yellow trousers, khan xep and a pair of shoes were carefully tailored based on the traditional costumes worn by Quan Ho (love duet) singers.

Along with the Atomium monument and the Grand Palace, the Mannekin-Pis is a cultural symbol of the Belgian capital that attracts a large number of local and foreign visitors.

The Mannekin-Pis will become a cultural ambassador of Vietnam for one day when he wears the dress in Brussels. The costume will then be kept in the Manneken-Pis Museum along with 900 other folk costumes from different countries and uniforms of various international organizations.

On the occasion, Vietnamese Ambassador to Belgium Pham Sanh Chau will introduced the unique culinary traditions of the Hue Royal Palace to Belgian and international friends at the Cinquantenaire Museum on September 30.

Visitors had the chance to sample the special dishes produced at three Vietnamese restaurants in Brussels.

A photography exhibition showcasing the traditional dress of Vietnam’s ethnic minority groups, is being held at the Wallonie-Brussels Parliament from October 1-5.
