The “Lottery Win” film directed by Vietnamese-American Dustin Nguyen has been selected for the qualifying round of the Best Foreign-Language Film award at the Oscars 2016, announced the Vietnam Cinema Department under the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism on September 29.
The film was selected by a national council established on September 14, thanks to its legal popularity, humanism and artistic innovations.
To enter the qualifying round, the film must highlight Vietnamese culture and be available on screens between October 1, 2014 and September 30, 2015 for at least seven consecutive days at commercial cinemas.
The film, which became a “phenomenon” during the 2015 lunar New Year, is based on a true story about a girl selling lottery tickets in the Mekong Delta region. She hands winning lottery tickets to a man who merely nods to buy them without paying her right away. She does that since he usually purchases the last tickets she has just before a lottery draw.
The Best Foreign-Language Film award of the 88 th Oscars is due to take place in Los Angeles, the US in March 2016.
