Italian Film Week brings six contemporary films to HCM City
VOV.VN - The Italian Film Week 2026 is scheduled to take place at Galaxy Cinema in Ho Chi Minh City from November 2 to 7 featuring six films that explore family, personal choices, artistic ambition and life in Italian society.
The event, to be organised by the Italian Embassy in Vietnam in collaboration with the Asian Film Festival in Rome, continues efforts to strengthen cultural exchanges between Vietnam and Italy through cinema.
Selected by director Antonio Termenini, the six-film programme brings together established filmmakers and emerging voices, with stories ranging from political and personal dilemmas to music, family ties and journeys of self-discovery.
The line-up opens with La grazia, directed by Paolo Sorrentino, which premiered as the opening film of the 82nd Venice International Film Festival in 2025. The film explores the moral dilemmas facing an Italian president as he weighs questions of power, law and personal responsibility.
Another highlight, Il Maestro by Andrea Di Stefano, centres on an ageing tennis coach and a promising young player, examining ambition and the relationship between mentor and student.
In Primavera, director Damiano Michieletto takes audiences to 18th-century Venice, following a young female musician living in an orphanage. The film explores her pursuit of freedom through music.
Margherita Spampinato’s debut feature, Gioia Mia, offers a more intimate perspective on childhood and family relationships through the story of a boy growing up alongside his grandmother.
Francesco Sossai’s comedy-drama Le città di pianura follows two middle-aged men and an architecture student travelling through Italy’s Veneto region, with their journey unfolding amid uncertainty and a search for direction.
Rounding out the programme, Ferzan Özpetek’s Diamanti explores women’s lives, solidarity and family relationships.
According to organisers, the selection reflects the breadth of contemporary Italian cinema, bringing together different genres, creative approaches and generations of filmmakers. The films range from drama and comedy to music-driven historical stories, road movies and narratives about growing up.
The six productions have received recognition at major international film festivals, achieved commercial success or won prestigious Italian film awards, offering Vietnamese audiences an opportunity to discover contemporary Italian filmmaking and the social and cultural experiences reflected on screen.
